Since losing his fiancée some years ago, atheist biologist Sam Rogers has blazed a trail in immortality studies. He's learned an awful lot about life and death. But when he discovers a mysterious hole beneath his sofa one morning, he's forced to reckon with all that is unmasterable about the universe--and some of it has tentacles.

Jellyfish Dreams Single eBook M Thomas Gammarino

Look, I've purchased two Kindle Singles thus far. The first was Andy Borowitz's "A Simple Twist of Fate," and I had no idea that I was about to spend a dollar on what seemed like a 3-page story. (My Kindle App is on my iPhone, so who knows how long things actually are?) Going into my 2nd purchase, "Jellyfish Dreams," I expected a short, short story. Having known the author for the past 20-odd years, I expected something very well-written and very clever. After finishing the book in about 3 protracted sittings, I was pleasantly surprised by how long of a short story it is, and how much fun it was to read. (Gammarino's first book, "Big in Japan," featured a protagonist that was pretty hard to like, and although his hero here does some pretty awful things and alienates most everyone in his life, he's infinitely more likable.)

"Jellyfish Dreams" is an awesome blend of science fiction and philosophy class that deals with heartbreak, loss, crises of faith, suicide cults, and a black hole under someone's couch that may or may not spaghetti-fy anyone who enters it.

It's an incredibly entertaining read that will make you laugh, think, google biology terms, and most of all, really hope that Gammarino writes another full-length novel sometime soon. Well worth the $2. It won't take long to read, but it'll stick with you for far longer.

Jellyfish Dreams Single eBook M Thomas Gammarino Reviews

Having read many pieces by this author, I know that sometimes you think you know where things are going, then you don't. Gammarino has a way with words (big ones - you will use the dictionary on your kindle, I promise you) and storytelling that will engage you from the beginning, dance with reality, then stick you in the spin cycle. A terrific story that deals with much more than you start out with, both in character and emotion. Excellent.
"Ten years after the death of his fiancee, and ten years before the Immortals walked out of the sea, Sam Rogers discovered a hole beneath his sofa."

I immediately wanted to know more about Sam and the things that happened in his life that led up to finding the hole--and Gammarino did not disappoint. I was fascinated by his ability to incorporate so many different and thought-provoking ideas so seamlessly into one story. There was something about Gammarino's style that made his story so accessible and so easy to read, though I have the feeling that no matter how many times I reread JellyFish Dreams, I will take something different away from it every time.

The range of thought and human emotion Gammarino was able to portray was impressive; one minute I was deeply saddened and the next I was laughing hysterically. It was honestly unlike anything I have ever read.

This novella is worth the read, AND multiple rereads.
This thing sucked me in - like a bug being sucked down a drain with the bathwater. I'm not even sure how to review it. I don't even know if I liked it. I do know I couldn't stop reading. Only one sentence was too nasty to contemplate. The shock value probably had a point, but I think I might have liked the book better without it. I cracked up a the end - the news stories reminded me of my visits to the jellyfish exhibits at Monterey Bay Aquarium.
I seldom read science fiction anymore, but stumbled upon this short work. It is in the same vein as "The day of the Triffids" and the story about "greenbeefos" whose name I have forgotten, where lower species take out mankind. But this one adds a moving romance (and I am not a sentimentalist), existential philosophy, medical details, ontology, theology, astronomy, black hole physics, and botany, all at a level to send you offen to your online dictionary.

To pack so much information, suspense and thought provoking detail into such a short work is exceptional.

As I say, it is short -- but it is dense -- so read it slowly.
Jellyfish Dreams is a little jewel of a book. Without a syllable of padding, the story addresses the largest questions in our minds and hearts.
Sam drops his bookmark and bending over, finds a hole that swallows light and matter. We come to understand that the bookmark was from his true love who died years ago of cancer. In the course of the story, Gammarino tackles the meaning of the universe, the yearning for answers, and the quest for immortality. And jellyfish, a species of which reverts to its germinal phase and is reborn forever.
Oh and love. The story is about love.
Read it!
I wasn't certain what to expect when I picked up this single, but it was definitely worth my time to read it! The humor in here is top notch. One too many times I found myself laughing out loud in a public place--a little embarrassing, but I'd do it all again just to re-capture some of the joy. For those working in the ivory tower, you definitely will see your colleagues in here--no doubt about it. ) The plot is wonderful, and Gammarino's writing style has you believing that you are there with Sam every step of the way. Highly recommend!
I would give this piece more stars if I could because it does what fiction should and so rarely does anymore entertain, surprise, challenge, and enchant. I've heard people say that they couldn't put a book down, but that rarely happens to me. This book, even on one of those execrable s, could not be set aside. Because this piece does NOT follow the conventional conventions (yes, I said that) of fiction, readers must remain not only aware of what they are doing but awake to every intriguing detail. I was also pleased to find that implications of the inexplicable hole beneath the sofa are explored to their, most likely, ludicrous ends with irony in full gear and plausibility relentlessly maintained. Nothing makes fiction more interesting than sliding teasingly along on the edge of what the writer knows readers expect. If you want to see what fiction can do, read this. If you want to have some fun, read this. If you want to snap the wrinkles from your gray matter, read this.
