Set against the historical backdrop of the social and political changes of the first half of the 20th century including both the first and second world wars, we follow the tragic lives of the working class Clarke family as they experience , loss and the horrors of war. Their eldest daughter Frances is a lonely and unusual girl who lives a better life in her mind and feels a greater connection to the spirits of her deceased sisters, Josephine and Ruby than those around her. As Frances grows older the intensity of these paranormal visitations only increase. Lost love and unforeseen tragedies leave Frances bound to hold a terrible secret and to keep it, she must retreat even further away from real life, leaving her with only the ghosts of her family for company.
The world moves on and Frances slips away from the world of the living, happier in the company of ghosts. Trapped in a love triangle between the dependable but broken Alfie who has loved her since childhood and Hugh her teenage sweetheart, whose higher class prevents them from being together. Hugh still loves for Frances and longs to escape his failing marriage, but fate conspires against them. Forced together by the necessities of the second world war Frances and Alfie must form a life together, while she struggles with her romantic feelings for Hugh, the nightly visitations of her family’s ghosts and a far, far darker secret which must never be uncovered.
This novel blends romance and the paranormal using the vivid historical setting of 20th century Britain, moving from the turbulences of the suffragette movement to the adversity of the of both the first and second world war.

I am generally a fan of historical novels so it was a no-brainer when I happened upon this book. Throw in a psychologically tortured main character and you really have my attention. This book delivers the goods and when you see life through the main character's eyes, it really makes the read worth it. The author has created a back story that reels in all of the people in the life of Frances and puts them into a perspective. Even though loneliness and grief are the main themes, you don't find yourself feeling sad by the story. Instead, the story pulls you in and lets you find your favorite characters that you will follow throughout the book. I think the author lends her creativity to this story in such a way that she brings characters and events back into the story at just the right time to keep it interesting. The book itself is very well written and if the author's next book is as good as this one, I will be first in line to buy it.Product details

This was a book I really enjoyed reading. War and the tragedies that come with it, personally and for families have to be tough and this book winds through such with superb characters and storyline. Frances is a deep character that will bring you so many twists and turns in the book that it will leave you tilting your head. I couldn't put it down until finished. I bet you will be the same. It totally deserves another read!
`The Lifewatcher' is one of those books you'd love to read while curled up in a corner on a rainy afternoon, with a cup of warm tea in your other hand. Indeed, that was what I did, and I immensely enjoyed it. I'm still through reading 70% of the book, but I'm posting this review to share my enthusiasm for Frances--she's one of those heroines that will stay with you long after you're done reading the book, like Elizabeth Bennet from Austen's `Pride and Prejudice' or one of those sisters in `Downton Abbey.
And indeed, I was heavily influenced by the visual cues from Downton Abbey as I read (`consumed' is probably the more apt word) Flemming's `The Lifewatcher'--the author has conjured powerful imagery and atmosphere that really sets it distinctly in the early 20th century. How the world of the early 1900s is depicted and described in vivid detail by the author actually gave me goose bumps--you can almost "smell" the linen, the rooms, the light slanting on a girl's hair. But amid the seeming innocence of this setting are tragedies awaiting at every turn the ravages of yet incurable diseases, the death of dear loved ones, and of course, the wars, those terrible wars. Through it all, the Clarke family--becoming among the "walking wounded" as the novel progresses--demonstrate a palpable `Britishness' they soldier on. Especially Frances, even if in her heart all she wants is to retreat in her own secret, safe place.
Flemming's writing is confident, mature, seasoned--this is a writer at the height of her powers. Like an expert chef (think Gordon Ramsay), Flemming knows to put just enough spice, the right ingredients, a dash of things here and there, to create something so beguiling for the senses. Overall, this is a fascinating read, and fans of historical fiction will not be disappointed--in fact, I'm pretty sure they will rave about `The Lifewatcher' in the years ahead. Five stars, no less.
I loved reading all about the Clarke family during the first half of the 20th Century. Following their trials and tribulations through the first and second world wars, this working-class family survives death of family members, terrible illnesses and the winds of economic stress.
The story really focuses on Frances, the oldest daughter, who is also sensitive to the supernatural. In fact, she begins to have visitations from the spirits of her dead sisters and retreats further and further into this spirit world in order to hide from the horrors of the real world.
This is a lovingly-told tale of a very interesting and in some ways quite typical blue-collar family living through the worst of what mankind can throw at us. But it’s also about one woman’s need to reconnect with the living, to take chances on love, and to own her feelings honestly. In many ways, it’s a story we can all relate to. And the historical experiences add a thrill and vividness to this romantic, supernatural story in a way that I found very engaging. Christine Mary Flemming has written another winner!
